H. W. Sands IR Blocking Screen Printing Inks are unique in that they strongly absorb in the Near IR region of 800nm - 1000nm and transmit a high percentage of light in the visible spectrum (400nm - 700nm). These inks have been specifically formulated for the production of transparent transaction cards. These cards are required to meet the infrared wavelength requirements of the ISO/IEC 7810, Third Edition, 2003-11-01 Amendment 2, 2012-01-15 specification for opacity which states:

All machine readable cards shall have the ability to block infrared wavelength light through the card to the extent as shown in the equations below.  The current through the test sensor shall be less when the card is positioned between the source and sensor (lcard) than when the opacity reference is positioned between the source and sensor (lref).  See ISO/IEC 10373-1 for compliance test procedures.

Transaction cards printed with these inks, in accordance with the guidelines herein, should perform properly in ATM machines and other readers possessing IR sensors to detect the presence of the card.

These inks are similar in structure and body to conventional solvent screen inks; however, the complex dyes used in the inks have special requirements for storage and use.
